Tired of boring biology worksheets? Turn your classroom into an immersive, self-correcting outbreak investigation!

Get your small groups up, moving, and thinking critically with this highly engaging Types of Disease Scavenger Hunt. Instead of a simple worksheet rotation, this resource functions like a self-correcting medical mystery escape room. Designed around an immersive Disease Investigation theme, students must analyze symptoms, transmission methods, pathogens, and health data to classify different types of diseases and trace the source of the outbreak through the classroom!

This is a fun way for students to review key concepts including infectious and non-infectious diseases, pathogens, transmission, prevention, and disease types.

Scenario: At 7:42am this morning, the school received reports of a mysterious illness spreading rapidly across the campus. Your job is to investigate the outbreak by analysing medical case files hidden around the room. Every disease you correctly classify will reveal a clue leading you closer to the truth, but incorrect classifications may send your investigation team to quarantine while the outbreak continues to spread. Your mission is to follow the clues, identify the disease types correctly, and uncover the final secret code before the school is forced into full quarantine.

How does the Types of Disease Scavenger Hunt work?

Students can start at any card in the room.

Success: If they correctly solve a case file, the card tells them exactly which investigation card to visit next. If they follow the trail successfully, they will visit all 11 cards, collecting a code letter at each station and eventually unscrambling them to reveal the hidden passcode.

The Trap: Every card includes incorrect answers designed to mimic common misconceptions. Wrong answers may send students into a decoy investigation loop or directly to a Quarantine station. To continue, students must complete a quick written response before returning to the previous card and trying again.

What’s Included in This Print-and-Go Types of Disease Scavenger Hunt:

  • 11 Active Path Cards: Featuring engaging, curriculum-aligned disease classification and investigation questions that reveal a hidden code phrase.
  • 3 Decoy “Trap” Cards: Designed to target common misconceptions about pathogens, transmission, and disease types, forcing students to rethink and self-correct.
  • 3 “Containment Zone” Cards: Penalty stations that pause student progress after major errors, requiring a short formative assessment task before rejoining the investigation.
  • Student Answer & Evidence Collection Sheet: Keeps students organized and accountable while recording clues, classifications, and reasoning.
  • Comprehensive Teacher Guide & Master Key: Includes setup instructions, the correct investigation pathway, answer key, and tips for running the activity smoothly with larger classes.

Skills & Topics Covered in the Types of Disease Scavenger Hunt:

  • Types of disease including: protist, bacterial, fungal, virus, environmental, organ/ tissue, genetic, nutritional
  • Infectious vs Non-Infectious Diseases
  • Pathogens: bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites
  • Disease Transmission Methods
  • Contagious (communicable diseases)vs Non-Contagious Diseases

Why Teachers (and Students) Love This Scavenger hunt game:

  • LOW PREP (Print & Go): Just print the cards, place them around the room, hand out the student sheets, and let the investigation begin.
  • Self-Correcting Mechanics: If students incorrectly classify a disease or misunderstand transmission methods, the pathway naturally redirects them into a loop or Quarantine, helping them identify mistakes independently.
  • Perfect for Kinesthetic Learners: Students love the movement, team building, mystery, and problem-solving elements that transform revision into an engaging challenge.
  • Versatile Group Settings: Run it as a competitive race, collaborative investigation teams, or a “Shotgun Start” format where groups begin at different cards to reduce crowding and maximize engagement.
  • Great to use as team-building activities and develop problem-solving skills
