About The Animated Teacher

Hi there!

I’m Katrina (aka The Animated Teacher)

Welcome to The Animated Teacher blog! I am so glad you’re here!

I’m a high school Science teacher from Australia who loves teaching. I also love woodworking, coffee dates, and spending time with my two beautiful girls and husband.

I started writing this blog because, as I’m sure you’ve already figured out, teaching is hard! And it is often difficult for teachers to ensure their work doesn’t take more of their ‘free time’ than they want it to.

My hope is that this blog will provide you with easy to implement tips, hacks, lessons and ideas so that you can engage students in the classroom and also have time to enjoy life outside of work.

A little about my journey…

Before I landed my first job as a Science teacher, I had built my teaching experience in other areas. I was an english and math tutor, clarinet tutor, dance instructor (I had also opened up my own dance school) and a youth group and bible study leader at church. These experiences were invaluable for preparing me for my teaching career.

In my second year as a teacher I was asked to take on the role of Head of Science. This was obviously a very steep learning curve for me but I absolutely loved the role and feel very proud of what I was able to achieve.

This same year we had a new National Curriculum published so I developed a new way of programming which has since been published in the Australian Council for Educational Leadership Journal

In 2014 I was awarded the Teachers’ Guild of NSW Award for Excellence in Teaching. I started presenting at National Educational Conferences in 2015 and had numerous articles published in educational publications.

In 2016 I received the ACEL New Voice Scholarship Award and was an invited presenter at the ACEL National Conference in Melbourne. This same year I changed schools and was privileged to take on the role of Year Advisor and then Science Learning Leader in 2017.

Since then I have had two beautiful girls and the need for me to balance my work and home life has never been so important to me.

I am so grateful for the amazing support I’ve received from other teachers throughout my career. I started The Animated Teacher blog in the hope that this space may offer you support in your teaching career, no matter where you are in your journey.

If you have any topics you would like me to cover in upcoming blog posts then please don’t hesitate to contact me! I’d love to hear from you!
