What is needed to access the digital escape room?

Students just need access to a device with internet access. While the escape room uses Google Forms, students are not required to sign in so they don't need an account to play.

What does the genetic inheritance escape room consist of?

The activity contains 8 tasks students must complete in order to 'escape'. These tasks include critical thinking elements (such as mazes, ciphers and codes) alongside scientific content.

Answers are entered into a Google Form (provided). The task cards are included digitally within the Google Form, but a pdf version of the task cards and answers is also included for you.

Students must put in the correct answer as a "key" to unlock the next challenge.

What this science digital escape room covers:

This genetic inheritance escape room covers key terms related to genetics and genetic inheritance including:

  • Punnett squares
  • pedigree and inheritance patterns
  • genotype and phenotype
  • X-linked and autosomal
  • homozygous and heterozygous genotypes
  • codominance
  • alleles
  • genetic trait: dominant and recessive trait

Students will need some prior knowledge of the above terms to complete the escape room.

Note: Due to the nature of the form and privacy issues of students across multiple schools completing it, you won't receive the results of students. Since it is self-marked and they can't progress to the next level without getting the answer correct, this isn't usually an issue. However, if you need to see that your students completed the task for accountability, after purchasing, please send me an email at katrina@theanimatedteacherblog.com and I will send you a form just for your class with the results spreadsheet.

Note: This digital escape room is designed to be a fun way to review and consolidate key skills and vocabulary in science. It is not designed to be a rigorous assessment of learning.

What are people saying about our digital escape rooms?

"Some escape rooms claim to be zero prep, but this one literally is. All I had to do was print it out so it was easier for my scholars to work on as there are some parts where it helps them to show their work and write it down. All of my middle schoolers were incredibly engaged in this review escape room. It was very Halloween-centered and they had an amazing time where everyone wanted to be involved." - Kayla

"The students loved this assignment and made it a competition.  Very easy to post and follow along." - Jessica

"Used this escape room on Halloween as a fun, academic activity. My students LOVED it! They worked in groups of 2-3 and were engaged the whole time. Puzzles were challenging enough without being too difficult. Highly recommend for students who are already somewhat familiar with Scientific Method vocabulary. A few needed some hints due to differences in verbiage I have used in class. Took approx. 45-60 minutes depending on the ability." - Carminda

"This was perfect for Halloween. Students were engaged and trying hard to solve the puzzles and riddles." - Sarah
