Tired of boring forces and simple machines worksheets? Turn your classroom into an immersive, self-correcting forces and simple machines activity scavenger hunt!

Get your small groups up, moving, and using critical thinking with this highly engaging Forces and Simple Machines Scavenger Hunt. Instead of a traditional worksheet rotation, this resource functions like a self-correcting STEM adventure where students investigate how different types of simple machines help people move a heavy object with less force and less effort.

Designed around an immersive engineering and physical science theme, students must analyze real-world scenarios involving inclined planes, levers, pulleys, wheels and axles, wedges, and screws. As they progress through the challenge, they will discover how simple machines create mechanical advantage, change the direction of the force, and make hard work easier in everyday life.

This is a fun way for students to review key science concepts from a Simple Machines Unit while participating in simple machine activities in a hands-on learning environment that encourages teamwork, problem-solving, and scientific reasoning.

Designed for middle school students grades 6-8.

Simple Machines Activity Scenario

At 6:15am this morning, construction on the new Science Innovation Centre came to a sudden halt. Equipment has failed, loads have been dropped, workers have reported unsafe conditions, and building materials are not reaching their correct locations. The Site Safety Authority believes a series of mistakes involving forces and simple machines may be responsible.

Your team has been sent to investigate.

How Does the Forces and Simple Machines Activity Scavenger Hunt Work?

Students can start at any card in the room.

Success: If they correctly solve a challenge, the card directs them to the next station. Teams will visit all 11 cards, collecting code letters along the way and eventually unscrambling them to reveal the final passcode.

The Trap: Every card includes incorrect answers designed around common misconceptions about forces and simple machines. Wrong answers may send students into a Safety Inspection Station. To continue, students must complete a quick written response before returning to the previous card and trying again.

What’s Included in This Print-and-Go Forces and Simple Machines Activity?

11 Engineering Challenge Cards
Featuring engaging, curriculum-aligned questions that explore different simple machines, mechanical advantage, and force interactions while revealing a hidden code phrase.

Why Teachers (and Students) Love This Scavenger Hunt

LOW PREP (Print & Go)

The problem with regular stem challenges is that they require a lot of preparation from teachers. Not this one!

Simply print the cards, place them around the room, hand out the recording sheets, and let the scavenger hunt challenge begin.

Self-Correcting Design
Students immediately receive feedback through the pathway structure, encouraging independent problem-solving and critical thinking.

Excellent Way to Reinforce Learning
Students revisit essential questions and core science concepts through movement and discussion rather than passive worksheets.

Perfect for Hands-On Learning
This activity transforms abstract concepts into meaningful STEM experiences that challenge students to apply their understanding.

Great Activity for Small Groups
Promotes team work, communication, and collaborative problem-solving while keeping every student engaged.

Versatile Classroom Uses
Perfect as a complete lesson, review activity, science center rotation, STEM challenge, sub plan, early finisher task, or end-of-unit assessment.

Whether you’re introducing the basic principles of simple machines or reviewing a complete Simple Machines Unit, this Forces and Simple Machines Activity is a great addition to your middle school science lessons and a great way to make learning fun while building smart minds.
